Anyone that knows me, knows I’m a podcast junkie. If I gave you a dollar for every time I say, “I just listened to a podcast on this topic!”, you would be rich and I would be very poor! And as a marketing leader, I’m always paying attention to how ideas come to life, how people make decisions, and how stories connect.
In my long list of shows I follow and of all my episodes in queue, these three podcasts rise to the top, each one offering valuable takeaways to think about growth, leadership, and communication.
1. How I Built This: Advice Line
This spin-off of the How I Built This podcast focuses on real-time problem solving. Small business founders call-in with challenges around growth, positioning, hiring, funding, and decision-making and get advice from experts who’ve actually been there and have been featured on the HIBT podcast.
Why it resonates:
You hear how leaders think through tradeoffs
Growth challenges are framed holistically, not just as “marketing problems”
It reinforces that strategy, brand, and execution are deeply connected
It’s a great reminder that marketing doesn’t live in a silo—it’s tied to every part of the business.
2. The Mel Robbins Podcast
At first glance, this might seem more personal development than business, but the overlap is real. Marketing, leadership, and growth all come down to human behavior and Mel does an excellent job breaking that down into practical insights.
What stands out:
Clear, actionable frameworks
Insights into motivation, confidence, and decision-making
A focus on progress over perfection
Mel comes across as an authentic friend who’s just a click of a button away. Her episodes are especially useful when thinking about how you show up, how you can take action, and how you can start to change your life.
3. Stuff You Should Know
Not everything needs to be directly tied to KPIs to be valuable. Stuff You Should Know feeds my curiosity and my lifelong learning itch while reminding me how powerful clear explanations and good storytelling can be.
Why I love it:
Complex topics are explained simply
Strong examples of engaging, accessible communication
A reminder that some of the best strategy comes from learning outside your lane
Some of the best ideas come from outside your industry and this podcast is great for keeping my mindset fresh.
The Influence on My Work
Each one of these supports a different part of what goes into my work:
Business strategy and leadership
Human behavior and decision-making
Curiosity and communication
They each influence how I think about marketing, a leadership discipline that touches every part of an organization.
